Relight My Sauvignon Fire


The British love affair with Sauvignon Blanc continues apace.

According to new figures from analysts Nielsen, the pungent pleaser has caught up with Pinot Grigio as the best-selling white wine in UK shops. New Zealand has to take much of the credit – or blame, depending on your point of view.

A bumper 2008 harvest resulted in a flooding of the market at low prices of New Zealand wines, especially Sauvignon Blanc. While many consumers couldn’t believe their luck, this ubiquity caused some people (i.e. me) to be, well, rude about its cookie cutter uniformity of shouty aromas and fruit pastille textures.

It seems that producers in Marlborough, the epicentre of Kiwi Sauvignon, are waking up to this. (more…)

Wild About Barrel-Fermented Sauvignon


In a nation awash with Oyster Bay, I find it hard to get excited by Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc anymore.

Unless it has been fermented in oak and sat on its lees (the dead yeast deposits from fermentation). (more…)

Toast Of Martinborough 2


When we visited Escarpment in New Zealand last November, we **only** got to taste some of its the wine straight from the barrel. Yeah, some hardship. So, it was great to get the chance to try some of the wines with food at the latest winemaker’s dinner held by The Providores in London. (more…)

Caravan Of Lovely Wine


Reaching Man O’War vineyard’s cellar door on New Zealand’s Waiheke Island takes some dedication. The unmade road that takes you there is not for the fainthearted, with its sharp drops, steep climbs and tight bends. And it seemed a lot longer than the 4km advertised at the turning into this road. A Toast To Martinborough


One of the greatest thrills when visiting a vineyard is when the winemaker invites you to sample the wines as they mature in barrel. Especially when the wines are from Escarpment Vineyards‘ premium Insight Series and the man making the wine  is Larry McKenna. But here we were in the bunker-like barrel room at Escarpment in Martinborough, New Zealand, tasting the progress of the Kupe Chardonnay and Kupe Pinot Noir from grapes picked earlier this year. So Long, NZ Sauvignon


This is the tale of how social media changed my mind about New Zealand wine. I’d got a bit sick of them, you see. All those endless supermarket shelves of gooseberry-screaming Sauvignon Blanc, and those big, jammy Pinot Noirs that all began to taste the same. Which I guess is why they’ve become so popular in the UK. Rather like your favourite chocolate bar, you know exactly what you are getting every time you buy these wines. To price-conscious Brits, that’s manna from heaven. (more…)
