As Victoria Moore recently wrote in her Saturday Telegraph wine column, people are happy to fork out for perfume but not for a decent bottle of wine.
For at least £3 less than a 30ml spray of perfume Anais Anais (depending on where you buy it) you can buy a great bottle of Italian white wine made from a grape called Arneis. I reckon the bottle of 2008 Malvira Roero Arneis I bought from Waitrose smelt a lot nicer as well: ripe pears, raw almonds, with hints of white blossom and grass.
Lower in acid than many other Italian whites (but this one still had a decent amount), this managed to capture the freshness and roundness of a white nectarine studded with those almonds.
A great aperitif.
